Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

As a TGWU member I feel I have a right to comment on your article 'Union Asks for Huge Pay Rise' (CM17-23 August).

Whilst Danny Bryan works from his ivory tower in London the union has come out with a claim that nobody in the road haulage industry can afford. There may be some companies that are making a decent profit from the industry, but not many.

What I cannot understand about this article is there is no mention of a reduced basic working week (still 40 hours in many establishments). With the prospect of the Working Time Directive involving road haulage you would have thought that reducing the basic working week would have been the major aim of this Union instead of some pie-eyed rise.

Surely this union should have begun to reduce the basic working week so that a reduction in working hours (48 hours under the Directive) will not hit HGV drivers as hard as it would at present.

Come on Danny, wake up to the real world.
