Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Rail freight is being run on the Highland mainline for the first time in four years, taking work from Scottish hauliers.

Transrail has begun running coal wagons on the Highland mainline carrying coal from Selby in Yorkshire for British Fuels. The fuel was previously moved by road.

Shipments begin this month after British Fuels switched from imported coal, which was taken by road from ports to customers.

The UK-mined coal is now dispatched by road from railheads at Elgin, Glasgow Moss End and Aberdeen and Inverness.

British Fuels says: "Drivers have lost some of the road haulage work but of course the coal does go forward from the rail terminals by road to our depots and customers' premises, but on a smaller level than before." He was unable to give figures on the number of lorry movements lost as a result of the change from road to rail.

This is the first freight to be moved on the Scottish line since cement wagons stopped using the route in 1991.

Work on Doncaster's £1.5m railfreight terminal for the Channel Tunnel is now under way. The "Direct For Europe" site will cover seven acres.
