Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Redcar haulage firms are concerned at the lack of parking lot facilities in the town for their heavy lorries and have taken the matter up with Teesside Council.

The existing two parking lots — at Fisherman's Square in Lord Street and at West Dyke Road — are both restricted to 30cwt unladen vehicles, and this leaves the one at Majuba Road, considered by many hauliers to be a high-risk area and described by them as a "desolate sand-swept Sahara" wide open to pilfering and vandalism. To overcome the difficulty they have suggested the two existing sites for smaller vehicles be made available for heavy lorries between 6 pm and 8 am when they are usually fairly empty, or alternatively to have the Mabuba park made into an official commercial vehicle park with a 24-hour guard.

The council is to consider the suggestions put forward.

Meanwhile. in Carlisle a lorry park to be operated by Vanguard Interstop Parking Ltd will be opened in October. The park is situated at M6 /A7 intersection and will be the first in the North to be built to DoE recommended standards. The first section will accommodate 175 heavy goods vehicies and will be floodlit and secured by closed circuit television.

The full security service will be in operation from the start but until the refuelling points and drivers' accommodation are opened later this year and in the early part of 1974, a minibus service will carry drivers between the park and Carlisle.

Stretford, Manchester, is to get a security lorry park for 200 to 300 vehicles at Barton Dock Road. The Property Services Agency of the DoE is now seeking tenders for its construction.
