Prisoners Abroad can provide financial help to imprisoned drivers and their families back in the UK (www.prisonersabroad.org.uk). Tom Lawson, the charity's deputy chief executive, says: "We've done a lot of work, particularly with truck drivers, who have been caught with contraband."

Captivity can damage "emotional and mental health". especially in a foreign country, he adds. And a family back at home may be "reduced to penury" when the chief breadwinner is locked up. "We don't get engaged with any legal processes, but we can help with translators and offer advice. Within a week of being incarcerated, drivers should be visited by the consular team in that country."

Lawson's team can send newspapers and books to prisoners; grants are sometimes awarded to families to help cover travel costs to the jail.
