• Industrial action at the household removals division of Pickfords moved closer this week after negotiations on working conditions broke down.

The TGWU says more than 1,000 workers, including drivers and porters, could lose further control over their working hours if the company imposes the changes it wants. New employees would also suffer cuts in holiday, holiday pay, sick pay and redundancy.

TGWU negotiator Danny Bryan says: "Pickforcls has indicated that if our members reject

these new terms it will seek to impose the changes anyway. If that happens we will be balloting our members on industrial action." The first ballot is expected within two weeks.

Pickfords says the changes in working conditions will be rendered neutral once employees receive a proposed pay increase.

Human resources director Michael French says: "We need to remain competitive in our industry, anti even after the changes we will still offer a better package to employees than our competitors."
