Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I N reviewing the returns of new vehicles licensed in January, we commented on the fact that the year had opened on a distinctly promising note, both goods and hackney-vehicle figures showing a material advance on the comparable returns for 1935. This favourable tendency is also to be found in the registration statistics for February, when 6,277 goods vehicles and 480 hackney vehicles were registered, contrasted with 4,920 and 337 respectively in February, 1935. The gross figure in respect of all new vehicles licensed in February was 32,854, which is more than 5,000 ahead of the total a year ago.

The Popular Types.

The chief advance in the goods classes was brought about by a big increase in petrol vehicles, which advanced from 4,691 in 1935 to 6,014 in February last. The main advances took place in the different classes-below 2k tons, in which there were useful increases, the figures in respect of each being as follow, last year's totals being given in parentheses :—Not exceeding 12 cwt., 1,362 (1,065) ; 12-cwt.-1 ton, 032 (726) ; 1-14 ton, 518 (421); ii-2 tons',. 1,032 (998) ; 2-2k tons, 1,776 (1,163)1 The registrations in the heavier categories were naturally much smaller, Nit even in these there were good :percentage increases.

Once again, there was a fall in the registrations of oil-erigined goods vehicles, this year's total of 102 having to be set against 136 for February of last year. The main registrations of goods oilers continue to take place in the 3-4-ten (30), 5-6-ton (20), and 6-7-ton (16) divisions; only 10 oilers

below 2k tons were registered. Included in the goods-vehicle returns are 27 machines licensed for drawing trailers, compared with 20 in February, 1935.

For many months past the electric vehicle has made a good showing, and the February total of 79 for such vehicles contrasts with 39 a year ago.

The total number of six-wheeled vehicles registered was 110, the figure for those of the articulated pattern remaining constant at 64, whilst there was a big fall in the rigid-frame type from 77 to 46. The eight-wheeler continues to attract the attention of certain classes of operator and the 22 vehicles of this type licensed in February last was well up on the total of six for February, 1935.

The whole of the 78 vehicles regis-. tered in the sections for agricultural vans and lorries took place in the petrol-engined class, the total contrasting with 50 in the previous year. The outstanding feature of the hackney-vehicle returns was the continued popularity of the oil-engined type, although such vehicles equipped with petrol engines also made headway. In the former category there were 200 registrations, compared with 106 a year earlier and, in the latter, 277 against 227 last year. Whilst there was a big drop in the 40-48-seater double-deck oilers (from 53 to 7), this was more than offset by the material advance in the 48-56-seater division (from 36 to 110). The 26-32-seater oiler also made progress, the registrations advancing from 7 to 37.

Petrol Hackney Pointers.

The 48-56-seater also made headway in the petrol-engined class, last year's total of 11 being increased to 41. There was not a great deal of variation in the other petrol-engined categories, although the 20-26-seaters and 26-32seaters showed a bigger fluctuation than most types, the former from 5 to 21 and the latter from 14 to 33. Only three trolleybuses were registered in the month. Included in the hackneyvehicle total were two six-wheelers, contrasted with 17 a year ago.

There was a marked increase in the vehicles grouped under the heading of miscellaneous, this being almost wholly brought about by the advance in Government-owned vehicles, from 205 to 1,120, due to rearmament activities.
