Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A device which spreads a truck's load by reducing friction on its axle springs can cut road damage by 20%, according to the Transport and Road Research Laboratory.

Although the load equalisation is not as good as when the vehicle is using air suspension, the system could provide an alternative to air, says the TRRL, which has just published detaiis of the device, designed by manufacturer George Blair.

Results of the TRRL tests are now being used by industry to develop steel spring suspensions with improved equalisation: the report costs £8 from the TRRL: (0344) 770014.
