• Chorley-based F Clayton & Sons has taken delivery of the first two 6X2 Pegaso Troner tractors sold in the UK.

The tri-axle Troners have an air-suspended lifting centre axle conversion carried out by Southworth Engineering of Preston.

Southworth stretched the original 4x2 Ironer wheelbase from 3.5 metres to 3.8m, in order to accommodate the extra fixed axle, as well as cartying out other chassis modifications. The conversion adds around 900kg to the Troner's kerbweight and took 10 working days to complete.

Clayton's opted for a tri-axle tractor in order to reduce the risk of drive axle overloading when running with pre-loaded reefer trailers for Frigoscandia.

The 6.1 tonne capacity middle axle can be raised by the driver to cut down on tyre wear when running empty. Cost for the conversion was £7,500, although Southworth says that this reflects the cost of a "premium conversion on a premium truck".

Ll As predicted by Commercial Motor 10-16 May, one of the first Seddon Atkinson Stratos with factory-approved drive axle air suspension has been bought by Aberdonian haulier ARR Craibs Transport. The 272kW(365hp) tractor will run in a 34-3 combination throughout the country delivering paper products for Wiggins Teape and on multi-drop work for Baxters Foods.
