Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Savings in turnround time are among the principal attractions of the use of tailboard lifts and in the study of costing this feature must be weighed against the capital expenditure involved. Probably the effects can be most readily appreciated if they are examined in relation to a tailboard leasing contract such as that offered by William G. Search Ltd.

In order to provide a specific example this company quotes the case of an operator working a 5.1,-day week and leasing a 30cwt-capacity tailboard lift over five years. Excluding maintenance, a figure is quoted of 5.2d per ton handled but it must be remembered that leasing can be claimed against Corporation Tax which would bring the net cost to 3.1d per ton handled. There could, of course, be a further reduction if the equipment ranked for the 25 per cent investment grant over the same period of five years. in the case already quoted the final figure would come out at 2.2d per ton.

The operator concerned is engaged in food distribution, operating Albion and Atkinson rigid and articulated vehicles, all with 30cwt tailboards. The loads are palleted and each unit handles an average of 30 tons of goods a day. They deliver to supermarkets and similar premises and it is only by the use of the tailboard loaders that the level of delivery is maintained.

Search-Teha tailboards are available in a range of six models from 10cwt to 5-ton capacity and may be operated by pto, batteryelectric, mains electric or hand hydraulic means.

While the principle remains the same, there are several variations to the standard platforms to enable special loads such as cable drums, stillages, and ball deck platforms, to be handled with ease. The tailboard deck is accessible from three sides. When lifting is complete the deck moves into place as a normal tailboard.

The Search-Teha loader is a robustly built equipment which does not form an integral part of the vehicle. Thus the tailboard loader can be readily transferred from one vehicle to another of similar specification. The construction is such that in many cases the Search-Teha may be expected to outlast the vehicle on which it was originally fitted. Available from: William G. Search Ltd., Whitehall Road, Leeds 12.

Surface grinder

A new surface grinder, known as the LSS63, has been introduced by Atlas Copco (Great Britain) Ltd. to replace the LSS62. It provides 20/30 per cent more power than the LSS62 and has a number of new features. These include an axial-mounted motor and a onepiece rotor-and-spindle unit. Radial and axial thrust is taken by a double-row preloaded ball bearing at the lower end, the top bearing being of a special prepacked type. The specific air consumption of the LSS63 is about 15 per cent less than the consumption of its predecessor.

The unit is available in four models. with maximum outputs of 1.85hp, 2.3hp, 2.45hp and 2.55hp.

Storage system

Dexion Ltd. announces a further extension to the range of its Speedlock storage system. A new 3in. deep lipped channel section beam has been introduced, which incorporates three-hook connector plates and the beam safety locking device unique to the Speedlock system. Beams are available in lengths from 3ft to 12ft in 3in. increments.

This new beam has been introduced into an already comprehensive range of Speedlock to fill a gap between the popular 2in. open and 3in. box sections beams. The development and introduction of the beam enables Dexion to provide structures more closely geared to customer requirements and to provide these at the most economical and competitive price. For more information on the complete Speedlock range contact Dexion Ltd., Dexion House, Empire Way, Wembley, Middlesex.

Extra deck locator

A new system called the Load-Lok has been evolved by Pakord Ltd. It provides for location and locking of decking bars in vans, containers and so on. Tracks that fit inside the walls of the body are made of light-gauge high-tensile Cot-ten steel; decking bars clip into two slots of the tracks at either end. Extra decks can be positioned vertically as required and the bars can be located at any interval along the length of the body.

Protection of doors is provided by a rearlocated shoring bar, which can be interchanged with webbing straps or conventional bars according to the cargo carried.

New brake drum lathe

A new brake drum lathe capable of turning and grinding the largest brake drums, with wheels and tyres still mounted, the Koyo-Van Norman brake drum lathe is now available from E. P. Barrus (Concessionaires) Ltd. It is known as the model 204 S and is a development of the original 204 made in Japan under a licensing agreement with the Van Norman Corporation.

This machine is fitted with an outboard spindle support which offers considerable savings in time and labour by allowing complete wheel assemblies to be mounted, and the drums machined, without removing wheels or tyres. It is capable of turning and grinding drums from 6in. to 28in. diameter, and up to 10in, in depth. A finely threaded handwheel control and a micrometer gauge are incorporated in the spindle support to ensure accurate level adjustment.

Power is provided by a 1 hp motor driving through a V-belt, and a range of spindle speeds can be obtained from the bank of pulleys. Variable feed rates, from 0.004in. to 0.017in. per rev, cater for anything from fast roughing cuts to fine stock removal. Any desired cutting rate within these limits can be obtained through the variable speed control box, which can be adjusted while the machine is running.

As on the earlier 204, a heavy duty tool bar and holder provide maximum rigidity and, for convenience, the tool is supplied with replaceable sintered carbide cutting tips. An inspection lamp built into the machine illuminates the inside of the drum during cutting, and an adjustable stop automatically disengages the feed when the cut is completed. The disc cutter is a double-sided tool which machines both sides of the disc at the same time. It is power fed and micrometer controlled, allowing an infinitely variable feed rate between 0.001in. to 0.020in. per rev as required. The double cutting arrangement allows the same amount of material to be removed from each side of the disc at once. ensuring the disc is central and parallel when re-assembled, preventing judder and overheating during operation.

Also available with the new machine is a two-speed grinding attachment which allows manufacturers mirror finishes to be obtained on both disc and drum refacing jobs. This accessory attachment has its own motor driving a special 6in. grinding wheel, and it is mounted in place of the disc brake cutter when it is required.

The machine caters for all types of brake from the tapered cone or ball bearing hub to the hubless drum type. It is supplied with all the necessary clamps, mandrels, fittings and tools to cope with every job from discs on private cars to large truck drums.
