• Frank Cousins is to retire as general secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union on September 8 1969. A ballot for his successor will take place from October 14 to November 9.
With the recent appointment of Mr. Harry Nicholas as Labour Party secretary, Mr. Jack Jones. formerly Midland Area secretary of the Union and now assistant executive sec retary at headquarters, is in a strong position to succeed.
