• Local hauliers in the Poole area were criticized by the chairman of the Bournemonth Labour Party, Mr. Lionel Bennett, in the local press recently for their staging of a Transport Bill protest rally in the town. Feeling that their complaints were far from irresponsible, they invited Mr. Bennett to answer their questions on the Bill at a meeting. This he did last Thursday.

Mr. Bennett told the hauliers that their criticism of the Bill did not seem to be selective; they were simply attacking a Bill outright when there were clauses in it which would improve an industry lacking in public respect.

Members of the audience were quick to refute this accusation and spent the evening explaining why they thought the new licensing and drivers' hours proposals unfair. Their arguments were those often heard at similar meetings and Mr. Bennett, a confessed outsider where road transport is concerned, could only answer that when the Bill was enforced the industry would not find itself as badly hit as it now feared.
