• A new BRS parcels depot for Leicester and district has been completed on a seven-acre site at Western Boulevard, in the centre of industrial Leicester, and will be opened next Monday. It replaces three existing and now inadequate depots at Belgrave Road, Gipsy Lane and Great Northern, which will be closed.

Some 140 vehicles will be operated from the new depot, including 57 trunk vehicles operating nightly over 45 different routes, these services forming a link in the countrywide parcels network serving over 24,000 cities, towns and villages.

Collection and delivery services from the new depot will cover all the territory previously served by the three depots now to be closed, extending to Grantham northwards. to Stamford to the east, to Lutterworth southwards and to Desford to the west.

The depot has a fully enclosed transit shed incorporating a 700 ft platform served by two carousel belts joined by two roller conveying links. The platform has two sections; a 351ft delivery section, 3ft 6in. high and 55ft wide, and a 296ft trunking section, 4ft high and 4511 wide. Both sections have a control office at points where cut-outs in the platform give easier unloading facilities.

The depot can also handle air freight and shipping traffic, ocean liner passenger baggage, Continental parcels traffic, cash on delivery traffic and warehousing and distribution. There is a separate warehouse building (52,000 sq.ft.), equipped for palletized operations.

Other facilities on the site include a service station and fuelling area, also parking areas for trailers and staff cars, the latter within a separate enclosure. A staff canteen is on the first floor of the warehouse.

The branch manager is Mr. M. C. Hill, formerly manager of the Gipsy Lane Branch. His telephone number will be Leicester 2329.
