Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DW Much Interest?

RE the majority of hauliers truly interested? Your 60 years of publishing and spotlighting other people's 3blems is a good thing, and very useful to your readersierwise your magazine would not retain its popularity. Being interested in tipping haulage problems, and a ;ular attender at meetings, I manage to keep abreast of iat's happening in our trade, both in my own area and my others, simply by studying the contents of The ,12Intercial Motor.

However, I am rather surprised at the number who do t attend meetings and others who do, having no owledge whatsoever of what's happening in other parts the country.

Would it be asking too much from area chairmen of all iodations connected with the haulage trade to inform !it' members, especially the stay-at-home type, that The ,monerctal Motor can be posted direct to their armchair ary week. I wonder how many people have been in the ulage trade for 60 years and have never read this tgazine. Being a "canny Scot" I consider reading your tgazine a cheap evening's entertainment.

Could lack of interest be responsible for a large number

of today's haulage problems, many of which are selfinflicted? There is no doubt in my mind. The numerous complaints of poor trading over a wide area probably answer this query.

Fife. VERY INTERESTED.

Increase in Rates THE report in The Commercial Motor of April 9 on the

recommendation of the rates committee of this Association for a 5 per cent rates increase with effect from June I gave the impression that the increase was intended to include the effect of the increase in the fuel tax imposed by the Chancellor in his Budget last November. This is not, in fact, the case. The latest decision of the rates committee covers only those increases in costs which have occurred since last October.

If there are any operators who did not apply the 21 per cent increase recommended at that time they should ask their customers now for a total of 74per cent.

London, WC1. F. R. LYON,

Public Relations Officer, Road Haulage Association.

[Whilst we are pleased to publish this letter clarifying the position, we feel obliged to repeat that the information we gave in our issue of April 9 regarding the recommended rates increase of five per cent, and its relationship with the autumn increase of 2+ per cent. was supplied by an RIM spokesman in a particularly authoritative position relative to the formulation of rates.--Eo.1
