ACALL for regional variations in the taxes on commercial vehicles and petrol came from several MPs last week, but—according to Mr. George Willis. Minister of State at the Scottish Office— the plan was impracticable.
The idea was mentioned first by Mr. David Steel, the new Liberal Member for Roxburgh. Selkirk and Peebles. There was no reason why the tax should not he regionally varied to assist the furthermost parts of the country, he claimed_
Mr. J, Bruce-Ciardyne (Tory, South Angus) urged that a larger slice of taxation should be imposed on motor vehicles generally, instead of being applied very largely to commercial vehicles, which represented a particular disadvantage in relation to the development of industry in Scotland.
The Welsh Secretary turned down similar requests relating to Wales.
