1965 Fist Transit built at Langley on 9 August. Innovations include printed circuit instruments, seatbelt mounting points and optional steering lock. Range includes V4 petrols and 43hp Perkins 4.99 diesel.
1972 Disc brakes fitted, which helped it stop, but so was the infamous York die
sel, which often prevented it starting. Millionth Transit built and production
moves to Southampton. 1978 First major facelift and introduction of Pinto OHC petrol engines. 1984 York replaced by new generation of 2.5-litre diesels.
1986 All-new Transit arrives, with better safety, economy and loadspace. 1991 First turbo-diesel, incorporating 'drive-by-wire' engine control.
1994 Smiley face' Transit launched, now with bodies up to 12m3.
2000 All-new Transit revealed, including front-wheel drive for the first time. 2002 Transit's smaller sibling, the Connect, arrives.
2006 Current model launched, soon followed by 4.3-tonne and 200hp versions. 2010 Six millionth Transit built, at Kocaeli in Turkey.
