joanna.bourkeiarbi.co.uk POWYS-BASED SPEED (The Complete Carrier) is set to open a new warehouse to accommodate additional volumes it has gained following a management buyout in April.

The Welsh pool business, formerly called Speed Distribution, has invested £40,000 to open a new 30,0000/ site on the Henfaes Lane industrial estate on a seven-year lease. It will be operational from October and will run alongside the firm's existing Severn Road facility, also in Welsh pool.

MD Phil Edwards, who jointly purchased the company with partner Nigel Jones in April. tells CM: "You have to sell your way out of a recession, and we have been doing just that by going out there and forming new strategic partnerships and really publicising our name. We feel there will be more big corporate firms looking to subcontract to us.

The company has signed a 12-month deal with Norbert Dentressangle (ND) to trunk goods in Llandrindod Wells and Shrewsbury to and from ND's Birmingham hub.

"We are in a number of negotiations to form more partnerships with large hauliers, because we have the resources to operate for them in a cost-effective way," Edwards adds.

In addition to being a Palletways member, Speed has also agreed to work for United Pallet Network. Edwards explains: "Because this is such a remote patch, and there is not a massive amount of volume, it was agreed we could work for both networks."

The company is also stepping in to help Palletforee distribute in the area after its member HWR Transport went into liquidation in June. It will continue to do Sc) until the end of October.

Five HMIs and five truck drivers have come on board to cope with the expansion.
