Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Want to know how competitive you are? The DfT wants your figures. Emma Penny explains why.

THE DEPARTMENT for Transport is seeking volunteers for projects which will help companies guage how successfully they are competing.

The DfT's Freight Logistics Department has already published studies containing Key Performance Indicators (KP1s) for operators involved in the food and non-food industries. Its latest report, looking at KPIs in pallet networks, is due to be published next month; a summary is included in the issue of Freight Future, free with this week's CM.

The DfT now has ministerial approval to do more of these studies which provide benchmark statistics against which companies can compare their own performance.

A DfT spokesman stresses that the information supplied by companies taking part is confidential — only they know which figures relate to their company. "We do need industry commitment to do these reports though," he adds. "We need companies, or operators involved in specific industries, to volunteer for them, and we need a minimum of 20 fleets for each study."

Data collection isn't too onerous, he says. "They are designed to minimise the work involved by operators. We design the data collection round the businesses we are looking at, and try to maximise the value of the output.

"If managers can make more informed decisions [as a result of looking at these reports] they will become better operators and more competitive."

The DfT's only criteria are that each industry supports the initiatives. has performance figures that can be easily and reliably measured, a range of performances and the potential to improve.
