• Whitby haulier W T Readman & Son has been rep rimanded by North Eastern Deputy Traffic Commissioner Brian Horner for failing to tax vehicles properly and being late in producing financial information. Readman holds a licence for eight vehicles and 25 trailers in possession, with four vehicles to be acquired.

The firm's proprietor, Alan W Readman, told a Leeds disciplinary inquiry that they had not acted on a reminder about the production of financial information as they had sent bank statements to the Traffic Area the month before, but without a covering letter. The company had substantial capital available.

After Horner had said that according to his information a number of the firm's vehicles were not taxed at one time, Readman said that all their vhides were currently properly taxed. One excise licence was sent for and the test certificate was not included. Another was applied for with out-of-date insurance details. One vehicle was off the road and another was taxed at the PLG rate.

Agreeing that the firm had paid a number of mitigating penalties after not taxing vehicles properly, Readman said that in his opinion vehicles should be taxed through fuel.

Horner said the firm had been working close to the line over taxing its vehicles—it could well affect Readman's repute.

Admitting a number of convictions, Readman said that two matters were the subject of appeals. He agreed he had been at fault in not notifying the LA.

A number of prohibitions in 1989 were the result of problems following a change of operating centre. There were better maintenance facilities at the new base.

Horner said that having seen the financial information he was satisfied about the ,firm's financial situation. Whatever Readman's personal view about the vehicle taxation system, he must follow the law of the land.

of Glasgow owner-driver John Mohan has been renewed for two years only by Scottish Deputy Traffic Commissioner Alan Worthington because of maintenance problems.

Walter Brown, of the Vehicle Inspectorate, said Mohan had been given a warning at a public inquiry in March 1989 after his vehicle had been given an immediate prohibition and there had been gaps in inspection records.

Mohan's vehicle was given a further immediate prohibition for a severe brake fluid leak during an investigation in April this year. The brake pipe was so corroded that it failed when the footbrake was applied. The
