• Detroit Diesel has launched a natural gas-powered version of its 8.5-litre 50 Series diesel engine in the US.
It comes in two ratings: 205kW (275hp) at 2,100rpm, with 1,206Nm (8901bft) of torque at 1,200rpm; and 187kW (250hp) at 2,10O-pm with 1,058Nm (7801bft) of torque at 1,200rpm. All these figures match the diesel-powered 50 Series bus engine.
The series 50G, as it is known, will meet the California transient emission standards.
Like the diesel powered version, it uses the Detroit Diesel Electronic Control System (DDEC) to control fuel injection and timing.
The gas engine is spark ignited and the DDEC system also controls the ignition system as well as the air/fuel ratio, throttle position, fuel flow and speed limiter.
The compression ratio is lowered to 10.0:1 and, like the diesel, the engine uses charge-cooling Gas is injected downstream of the charge-cooler and before the throttle body.
At present, there are no plans to offer the engine in the United Kingdom.
