T RAFFIC signs are to be improved I and in some instances will be brought more closely into line with Continental practice. The law on signs is to be brought up to date, and the Minister of Transport last week began

consultations with representative organizations.

He proposes to make new Traffic Signs (Size, Colour and Type) Regulations and General Directions to supersede those made in 1950, which do not include a number of signs now in common use.

It is psoposed to amend the crossroads sign to accord with the road layout and to introduce new signs for staggered junctions. The "bend "

sign will be changed. to give a clear indication of the nature and direction

of the bend. The torch symbol on " school': and " children " signs will be replaced by appropriate pictures.

A series of standard signs for use where road works are in progress will be generally authorized and a new "slow major road ahead" sign for use at "T" junctions will he introduced. Different colours will distinguish between signs indicating that waiting is prohibited and those proclaiming limited waiting.

A comprehensive system of carriageway markings is to be incorporated in the regulations for the first time. Wider use of reflectors or reflecting material to improve the visibility of traffic signs at night will he authorized.
