THE ROAD Haulage Association (RHA) has asked the Government to restore price parity between petrol and diesel in the next Budget.
A smaller refining capacity for diesel means that diesel vehicles are charged nearly 12p per litre more than petrol users, a difference which the RHA says is inequitable.
Kate Gibbs, the RI-IA's communications head, says: "It's not just road hauliers who are getting a raw deal. Diesel cars, originally sold 'g as the economic option, accounted for more than 40% of new car sales in 6 2007. But today, the pump price differential between petrol and diesel has made the engine choice almost immaterial."
The RHA has asked the Government to cut the duty on diesel by 5p a litre and increase that on petrol by a corresponding 5p, ensuring that a similar price for both would be restored.
