Credit crunch affecting Christmas recruitment

THE ECONOMIC slowdown is causing employers to adopt a more cautious approach to driver recruitment in the run-up to Christmas, according to one recruitment agency.

Manpower's survey of more than 2,100 UK employers regarding their hiring plans for the past three months of the year found that while 6% of employers in the transport sector expect to recruit more staff, 3% will make workforce cuts.

Simon Edwards, head of driving at Manpower, says: "Many companies are taking a wait-andsee approach to their recruitment plans."

Manpower also found that companies in the East, SouthEast, Wales and the North-East are the least optimistic about hiring more drivers.

BREAKING NEWS: The Government is promising a £350m aid program to help small businesses invest. This includes loosening the rules on public funding for training. More in next week's CM.
