often hailed for their man-management skills and dedication, so it's no surprise that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson won Pargeter's backing.
"He has a record as a very good organiser and successful manager," says Pargeter. "He would bang heads together, wouldn't bow to anyone and doesn't suffer any nonsense. It needs someone a bit forceful who could get the Government to act. The Freight Transport Association is lobbying, but not much seems to be happening."
Pargeter sees the transport job as something of a poisoned chalice. The post tends to be frequented by ambitious ministers who "build up their expertise and then move on". And he warns: "Hoon's probably only going to be in the post for a year or so and, on that basis, you would have to question his enthusiasm."
