House of VI' Commons last week by Sir Joseph Nall for an assurance that, in any proposed modification of the Government's Road-haulage Scheme, no preferential treatment would be 'accorded to, nor any monopolistic position conferred upon, any particular transport undertakings or classes of undertaking, Mr. Noel-Baker, Parliamentary Secretary to "the Ministry of War Transport, replied that any modifications which might be put' into effect would be designed to promote the national war effort, and not to serve interests such as Sir Joseph had defined. NEW COLOUR FOR LONDON BUSES

LONDON Transport buses, trolleyLA buses and trams are to change colour. The present bright red, which has been the standard for many years, will be changed to oxide red, giving the vehicles a brownish-red appearance. The vehicles will be painted in the new colour as necessary.

Another change of colour is also to be made. Greyish-cream will replace the grey now used for roofs, window surrounds on upper and lower decks, and corner panels.

BEWARE OF THOSE FROSTS!

MINISTRY OFFERS ADVICE CAPERATORS-of motor vehicles are kJ requested by the Ministry of War Transport to take early steps to guard against the danger of damage through freezing, and it gives the following advice:— The best precaution against frost when a vehicle is standing for any length of time is to empty the water system. In any case, before applying for anti-freeze, consider alternative methods, as supplies are very limited. If no alternative method be practicable, application for anti-freeze should be made to the appropriate Regional Transport Commissioner, giving reasons why other methods cannot be adopted. A mixture of one part of anti-freeze and three parts of water should be adequate here.

The requirements of the Civil Defence, Police and National Fire Service are dealt with by the Ministry of Home Security.

There is increasing difficulty in replacing cylinder blocks, heads and water-pump components, but if, despite precautions, such a part should be damaged, the possibility of repairing the crack 0; break should be explored. The M. of W.T. will advise on such problems, either directly or through, the Regional Maintenance Officers. BIG BUS STATION FOR NEWPORT?
