DAV HICiCi IN BOTTOM. the former general secretary of the United Road Transport Union (URTU) who tried to get his old job back, has been thwarted in his bid to force a re-run of the election ballot.

Bob Monks was re-elected by a sizeable majority in February but I ligginbottorn complained that the union's handling of the election had been in breach of both the union's rules and the law.

However. the Certification Office has found in favour of URTU and has refused to grant a re-run of the ballot. Higginbottom has 42 days in which to appeal against the decision.

Monks admits he has had an 'annus horribilis', and that a line will not be drawn under the affair until he finds out that Higginbottom will not he challenging the latest decision.

"At the moment the Veuve Cliquot is at the top of the fridge," he adds."If we find out just before Christmas that Higginbottom will not be appealing then we can finally pop the cork!"
