TRANSPORT AND GENERAL Workers Union (T&G) members at TNT Express have accepted a package worth about 10% which the union believes will set the standard for the rest of the parcels sector.

Basic rates will go up by 7%, of which 3.5% will he backdated to I July 2006 with the remainder payable from 1 April next year. Bonus payments will be consolidated into basic pay. with premium rates for working an extra day over the basic five-day week and for working more than 39 hours a week.

T&G national secretary Steve Turner reports that his members voted for the deal by a margin of almost three to one. lie says it "builds upon the T&G's earlier success with UPS".

That deal, negotiated last November. was described by the T&G as ground-breaking. it also consolidated drivers' bonus payments into guaranteed biBic earnings. A spokesman for TNT Express says: "It's pleasing to see such an overwhelming majority of TNT Express employees accept our pay offer. Over the years TNT Express has had a healthy working relationship with the T&G and we continue to enjoy an excellent industrial relationship.

The manner in which this latest agreement was reached is further testimony to that enduring relationship."
