The RHA is warning drivers waiting for ferries in Calais to be on their

guard after two drivers are hospitalised. Dylan Gray reports.

TWO DRIVERS resting in their cabs faced a sustained assault by would-be illegal immigrants who punched,kicked and even bit them before stealing their possessions.

Owner-driver Darren Mayer and Colin Minister, who works for Dover-based John Bywater Transport, were hospitalised with serious injuries following the attack in the Dunes area of Calais. Because they were bitten, both drivers face an anxious wait for the results of blood tests.

Mayer says:"One was attacking mein the cab with an iron bar while another was taking my belongings. They tried to pull mc out (lithe cab,

hut I managed to resist.The whole ordeal lasted about 10 to 15 minutes. which left me quite shaken.

French authorities were contacted hut passed the case to British police who have no jurisdict ion in France.

Peter Cullum from the Road Haulage Association has met the Consul General who promised to pursue the case with the French authorities Cullum says: 'We advise drivers to stay away from the Dunes area as it is an easy target for the bad guys. This year has seen fewer incidents than last, so we hope this was an isolated case."

Mayer is also involving the home Office and adds:"I'm going to fight this case as I feel something has to be done before someone gets killed."

The thieves escaped with personal possessions including money. pill )nes and laptops.
