• by Sally Nash The People's Fuel Lobby is seeking an urgent meeting with North Yorkshire Police following reports that officers deliberately stopped protesters from joining the Jarrow-London "crusade" convoy and made life as difficult as possible for those who did take part.

London solicitor Stephen Alexander from Class Law has written to the Chief Constable at North Yorkshire Police, outlining the PFL's concerns.

"We have got film of what went on, and want the police to answer the serious allegations against the force such as a report that 35 motorcyclists were cutting up the convoy," he says. "That's just not the way to go about it Alexander wants the police to acknowledge that their actions were too heavy-handed.

The new PFL chairman, Mark Francis, who took over from David Hanley, says that the meeting will be a vehicle to air drivers' concerns.

We have got some very unhappy people here because of the police actions," says Francis. 'There have been reports that they stopped people from joining the convoy, preventing them from lawful protest."

His comments came as the PFL ruled out further protests until after Christmas.

"We're all family men, and there's no way that we would disrupt Christmas for people,Francis concludes.

II Gwent police have confirmed they are investigating a death threat against David Hanley.
