• Hundreds of hauliers who have registered their trucks abroad but still operate them under UK Operator's Licences may be forced to re-register the vehicles in Britain.
This follows a ruling by Senior Traffic Commissioner Michael Betts against Minishant, Ayrshire-based Reids Transport.
Betts had been directed by the Transport Tribunal to reconsider a decision in March to delete Irish-registered vehicles from the company's Scottish licence.
He had originally cut the company's licence authorisation from 35 vehicles to four and from 45 trailers to six (CM 6-12 April and 16-22 Nov).
Standing by his decision, Betts says: "If I am correct in my overall conclusion, it will affect more than 200 holders of International licences who specify more than 700 foreign-registered vehicles on their licences.
"The fact that this represents a significant loss of revenue by way of VEG foregone is a matter for the government and not for me," he adds. "However, if I am right, it will be necessary for all traffic area offices to give these operators a sensible period of time, perhaps two months, to reregister their vehicles in Great Britain or remove them altogether from their licences."
Raids plans to appeal against the decision.
