Electriques de Charleroi (A.C.E.C.) has announced completion of trials on a prototype 100-passenger diesel-electric bus, to be called the Electrobus. Results are officially described as "completely satisfactory ". Each rear wheel is fitted with an electric motor fed by a dynamo which is driven by a constant-speed diesel engine. The company says that a power
source other than a diesel could be used.
Advantages of the Electrobus are given as: elimination of mechanical gearchange with consequently high average speeds; less noise and safer driving; elimination of black exhaust since the diesel runs at constant speed; a reduction in fuel consumption; lower maintenance owing to absence of mechanical transmission.
