A IN EW engine and new styling are (—I features of the Morris 4-ton van Ind pick-up announced this week by Morris Motors, Ltd., Cowley, Oxford. There are no price increases, and purehase tax has been reduced by £2 17s. I0d. Furthermore, the price of certain additional fittings has been reduced, the tilt, for example, being 14 cheaper.

As forecast in The Commercial Motor on November 2, the new vehicles are powered by the B.M.C. B-series 14 litre o.h.v. engine, similar to that fitted to several private Cars in the B.M.C. range and to the lightweight range of commercial vehicles introduced last June. The unit develops 50 b.h.p. at 4,200 r.p.m. and replaces the side-valve engine of earlier models.

Extra safety features include a deep sunken-centre steering wheel with horn ring and self-cancelling directionindicator switch, twin wing mirrors and curved one-piece windscreen. These vehicles are among the minority offered

with twin wing mirrors as standard equipment.

Hydraulic operation is used for the single-dry-plate clutch and the fourspeed gearbox has synchromesh engagement on second, third and fourth gears. The three-quarter floating hypoid rear axle has a reduction of 5.125 to 1.

Independent front suspension is by torsion bars and rubber-mounted semielliptic springs are fitted at the rear. All wheels are controlled by telescopic dampers and carry 6.00-15-in. tyres.

Home models are supplied with a bucket-type seat for the driver, whilst export models have a full-width benchtype seat. An additional bucket or bench seat is available for home models at extra cost.

These new models are available in four forms: chassis with cab, less back panel for use with one-piece body designs; chassis with cab and back panel; 138-cu.-ft. van, and pick-up.

In this country the price of the van is £521. 10s., plus £83 I Is. 7d. purchase tax, and pick-up £510 10s., plus £83 1 Is, 7d. purchase tax. A tilt for the pick-up costs 120, and a bench seat, if fitted, increases the price by £10. The cost of the additional bucket seat is £7 10s.

These prices are for vehicles painted at the factory in the standard colours. Purchase of the vehicles painted in primer only reduces the price by £5 10s.
