Southend-on-Sea has received L.G.B. sanction to spend 005 on a Merryweather.

Grimsby people are proud of the fact that they were the first in Lincolnshire to go in for motor fireengines.

The London County Council has accepted an offer of Dennis Bros., Ltd., to supply a motorcar of about. 15 h.p., with accessories, for use in the fire brigade, for £400.

The " Lowestoft Weekly Standard " is aiding progress, and incidentally the due protection of its readers' property, by advocating the purchase of a motor fire-engine for Suffolk's popular wateringplace.

Malvern is Cautious. Malvern C.D.C. has not yet come to a decision in respect of a motor fire-engine. The chief officer will visit various towns in which horses have been replaced ; he should reach a cone] esion quickly.

Weybridge U.D.C.

A proposal to purchase horses for the local brigade was referred back at the meeting of the Weybridge U.D.C. on the 6th inst. One speaker's comment was that " half Weybridge might, be burned down " —presumably unless a motor be purchased Mitcham Declines Horses.

At a recent meeting of the Mitcham Parish Council's No. 1 Fire Brigade Committee, it was decided to recommend the Council to purchase a motor fire-engine, at a cost of between £800 and 2900, owing to the refusal of the present contractor to let the horses undertake the work except at a much higher figure than is now paid.

Tenders are out for the supply of a second motor hose wagon for the Winnipeg Fire Department, and it is stated on good authority that the city contemplates the conversion of the entire fire-fighting outfit to motor vehicles.

The Motorization of Munich Fire Brigade.

It transpires that the Munich Corporators have referred back to the magistracy the project to motorize the local fire-brigade vehicles on a petrol-electric basis, the Corporators holding the opinion that, instead of the proposed " mixed " system, it would be better to have either electric or petrol-driven vehicles. As readers of THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR were informed a few weeks back, Munich is to have an all-motor fire-brigade at a cost of over £19,000. Experts recommended the " mixed " system.

For Brewery Protection.

Two six-cylinder, 500-gallon, Denn is-Gwynne, turbine, motor fire-engines have recently been delivered to the Cape Hill Brewery, of Messrs. Mitchells and Butlers, at Birmingham. The engine is of standard design as supplied to Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham, and the official test was carried out, on the 16th inst., before a large gathering of fire chiefs, when the following results were noted One 2 in. jet at a Pressure of 120 lb.

Two ll in. jets at a pressure of 130 lb.

Four 1 in. jets at a pressure of 110 lb.

A well-known fire chief remarked that the 2 in. jet in particular was the finest he had even seen from any fire pump. Messrs. Mitchells and Butlers will probably be the first company to go in for such up-todate machines as these for the protection of their property. It is also interesting to note that the Cape Hill brigade, under Supt. Hamilton's direction, is one of the crack brigades of the country, usually carrying off the majority of honours at most of the firemen's competitions.

Mannheim's Benz.

The City of Mannheim has voted a sum sufficient to cover the cost of an automobile fire-engine. It is probable that Messrs. Benz will get the order, a Gaggenau-Benz petrol chassis, fitted with a turbine-pump, having already " demonstrated " before the Mannheim officials, who were deeply impressed by the efficiency of the engine.

Canadian News.

In Toronto, Ont., recently the first of the motor-propelled apparatus was placed in commission for the fire department. It is a new motor truck fitted with ladders, hose and chemicals.

London, Ont., may purchase a second motor fire-engine, preferably a steamer. Fire Chief Aitken and Chairman Ashplant of the Fire and Light Committee of that town, as well as other members of the council, are desirous of having an automobile apparatus and want to see its introduction into the city's fire department.

The first practical test of the first-aid motor fire-engine and the hose wagon belonging to Ottawa, Ont., was recently made. The result was that a fire loss was kept down to 500 dollars, which, with the ordinary methods, would probably have been at least 3,000 dollars. 'rhe fire in question broke out in the attic of a large dwelling. A line of ordinary hose was laid at the fire on the outside, while the chemical stream was played on the inside. The whole 140 gallons of chemicals, in addition to a very small amount of water was used. The result was that the fire was extinguished with the loss confined almost entirely to the attic. Had water been used in the ordinary way, the damage to the lower floors would have been very large. Fire Chief Graham was well pleased.
