Chris Wakeham, managing director • drugs policy advisors Hampton ight, says it is important that employs are told what will be tolerated, fore a policy is introduced.

"As long as the policy is clear and minct no-one will have a leg to stand he says. "Once it is put in correctly s just like all the others. However, If u don't use it correctly at first the tole idea will fall apart."

One study shows that 20% of night

shift workers use amphetamines, so each company needs to think hard about what prohibitions it would wish to put in place. 'You must consider what you are doing at the moment," Wakeham says. "Does it fit in with the culture that already exists?"

DTS Logisitics has a policy which also involves random drug testing. The firm employs 600 people and operates 60-70 trucks. Operations director Andrew Palmer says businesses must change with the times: "We have to recognise society as it is today, our workforce is in effect a cross section of it, so we decided we should do something."

Palmer says the policy was not difficult to introduce and reports that the firm received a lot of support from its employees.

However, Wakeham suspects that only 10-15% of hauliers have Launched such a policy, leaving hundreds more needing to catch up, "What you need to consider is can someone come back to you when they have been dismissed? It is a question all companies need to know and answer."
