Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• We were delighted to read your report (CM, 11-17 April) on the aerodynamic package we have developed for truck bodies in association with the Loughborough University of Technology.

You might be interested to know that latest reports from our customers suggest that even the fuel savings you quoted (around 4.01it/100km, or 15%) could be exceeded in practice.

However, for the record we must point out that your article transposed the before-and-after miles per gallon fuel consumption figures, implying that even though there is a saving in metric terms through using the system, there is actually a penalty if you measure consumption in imperial units. While we at Southfields like to think we have made ample preparations for the 1990s, we would stop short at suggesting that our energy-saving system only works if fuel consumption is expressed in Euro-speak. It is equally effective in gallons!

J Richards Joint managing director, Southfields, Loughborough, Leics.
