Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Still on USA topics, I've been reading up a fascinating programme for an unusual event held in April in California : the Mechanical Failures Conference.

Not for maladjusted robots crying : "Betty, I'm a failure," like poor twitchy old TV Frank with his little black beret, but a " stop-it-before-it-starts " approach to mechanical reliability.

I would have thought that failure prediction methods— some by sonic or lubricant analysis, some by monitoring in association with case histories —would interest quite a few large operators as well as manufacturers. The conference covered fields as disparate as nuclear engineering and rail-wagon wheels, but anyone interested in getting the proceedings can write to the Office of Information Activities, National Bureau of Standards, Washington DC, 20234, USA.
