Opposition APPLYAPPLYING for new excursions from ING to Gatwick Airport, Windsorian Motor Services, Ltd. were opposed, last week, by the London Transport Executive. Mr. Richard Turnbull, of the L.T.E.'s country bus and coach section, asked the South Eastern Traffic Commissioners for protection on the ground that both Windsor and Gatwick were within their area of operation.

He said the L.T.E. had applied to operate a similar excursion, but they did not propose to start until next year when the airport would be a bigger attraction. Mr. Turnbull contended that Windsorian's application was premature, as the airport was not yet ready to receive sightseers.

Mr. C. R. Beddington, for Windsorian, pointed out that although the two points were in the L.T.E.'s general area, they were outside their special area, so the L.T.E. should be treated as ordinary Operators.

Granting the application. Mr. H. J.

Thom, chairman, said both parties agreed that a peed would exist in the future, even if it were not present now. The Commissioners were always ready to listen to a stage-carriage operator seeking protection, but in this case it was clear that Windsorian were the chief caterers for excursions and tours from Windsor.

To relieve congestion where l2 the ALondon-Great Yarmouth road passes through Ingatestone, Essex, a £248,463 road two miles long will take traffic away from the narrow village street. Work will start shortly on the project, which will remove a serious bottleneck, particularly during summer week-ends. Where the new road passes under Fryerning Lane, a new bridge, with a 78-ft. span, will carry the lane over the by-pass.

In the London area, a £761,000 contract for building an underpass on Western Avenue, one of the capital's principal radial roads, has now been awarded. The underpass will take Western Avenue traffic below Hanger Lane, Middx. New roads will branch from both sides of the underpass to form a surface connection with the North Circular Road.

The project is part of a general improvement scheme for the trunk road. which carries a large volume of traffic between Merseyside and the Midlands. Another diversion is planned at Little Sutton.
