IT is no use running a railway designed 1 for the Victorian era in days when there are 7m. motor vehicles on the roads of this country," said Mr. Harold Watkinson, Minister of Transport, when he spoke at Camberley last week. He added that there had to be a reduction of services which no longer fitted in with the modern traffic pattern.

"Let us be in no doubt that a modern railway system is essential to our country. The role that it will play will and should change somewhat, but the railways are just as essential to our industrial efficiency and prosperity as they ever were," he continued: "RATION ROAD SPACE," SAYS ARCHITECT

A RCHITECTS should work hard to in.prepare the ground for acceptance of the idea that road space should be rationed among different types of vehicle, stated Mr. J. Brandon-Jones, of the Architectural Association, when he addressed the annual conference of the Royal Institute of British Architects last week.

Prof. Sir William Holford, professor of town planning at London University, said that traffic should be analysed to "decide what is to go into which place." He thought that reasonable restrictions on certain types of vehicle would be accepted.

The Ministry of Transport, be continued, had no strategy of cornmunication between towns and would not outline their road plans for five years ahead.
