Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

"!PON consideration of the Trans %) port Bill in Standing Committee during the wholly inadequate period allowed, of 56 amendments put down on behalf of the passenger road transport industry, 23 were guillotined, nine not called, nine withdrawn, 13 defeated, and only two were accepted. It is . . . scandalous that such scant consideration should be given to a measure which so closely affects the lives of every citizen of this country."

These words were used by Mr. J. S. Wills, Minst.T., chairman of the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., at the company's annual general meeting. .

lie mentioned that during the year, co-ordination with municipal transport operators and the main-line railways had been extended. New joint services had been introduced in association with Birmingham, Walsall and West Brom

wich corporations. Several services from G.W.R. and L.M.S. stations to adjacent towns had been introduced or restored.

Fifty-eight gtage-carriage services and 16 express services which were suspended during the war were re-instituted. Stage-carriage mileage increased by more than 10,000,000. Day excursions and tours had been resumed on a large scale.

Despite the implications of the Transport Bill, the "Midland Red" was continuing to pursue a normal commercial policy, and had entered into commitments totalling over £2,250,000. The company was buying 557 new buses at an estimated cost of £2,000,000, although some of them would not be delivered before 1949. New central workshops in the Birmingham area and extensions of the Sutton Coldfield garage would cost £160,000.
