Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Engine Mounting ONE of the most important considerations in • the installation of an oil engine in a road vehicle is that of its mounting in the frame. Characteristic vibration set up by such units has caused considerable attention to be paid to the form of engine mounting adopted, with the result that in a properly designed layout practically no vibration is transmitted to the frame.

The accompanying illustration shows the system adopted on the Dodge 5-tonner, on which model it is now standard. The unit is three-point sus

pended, the support points—one forward and two at the rear—being chosen to permit limited oscillation of the engine about an axis running through the centre of gravity of the unit.

Engine weight and torque reaction in top gear are accommodated by rubber in shear, whilst indirect-gear torque reaction is controlled by a separate rubber buffer. At the top of the support there is a clearance between this buffer and a metal pad carried on the engine support bracket.

At the front, the support is also of rubber, bonded to steel, the plates being sandwiched between the front crossmember of the frame and a pressedchannel member attached to the engine

mounting feet. The weight of the engine, in this instance, is taken by rubber in compression.

Suitable arrangements are, of course, made to prevent engine movement from affecting the various controls. It should be mentioned that all Dodge 5 tonners now being produced are for shipment overseas, but the maker hopes, in the near future, to make an appreciable number available for the home market.

The power unit is the well-known Perkins P.6 which provkles ample power, and imparts to the vehicle a good all-round road performance. With a wheelbase of 13 ft. 6 ins., this machine is under 2 tons 10 cwt. unladen weight.
