Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• . . Matters.

TM: _Dennis works mean to have the Guildford order.

TyMosley (Lancs.) is preparing to spend money on up-to-datedness.

At Barry, action is suspended. Several local negotiations have yet to be completed.

Bournemouth and Southampton have bought Morris machines, each with "Ajax" pumps.

The Exeter City Council will -3 hortly discuss the matter of the purchase of an up-to-date motor ire-engine.

Cab-horses for Fire-engines.

Ti. appears that Scarborough's :ire-engine depends upon cab-horses or its movement. Scarborough already has an unenviable reputa1.ion for retaining cab-horses in preference to up-to-date means of conveyance.

Southampton Expects, etc.

A Southampton correspondent states that much disappointment was caused in the town, on a recent occasion, when an emergency call for the new motor fire-engine to turn out was not answered, owing to the fact that some overhaul was being completed at the time. .

Near Manchester.

A local correspondent writes :— 4' Prestwich, between Manchester and Bury, wants fire-killing methods providing, and has been wondering whether to join some neighbouring town. It is up to some enterprizing agent to show Whitefield that the proper way is to get a motor engine of its own."

The new station of the Renfrew County Council is to be at Johnstone. A six-cylinder Dennis fireengine with turbine pump will be accommodated.

Lt. S. Sladen, R.N., chief officer of the London Fire Brigade, again refers favourably to motor equipment in his 1911 report.

Was to Have Had Petrol-. electrics.

The Saurer people at Munich have received what "commercials" are wont to term a "very nice little order," the Municipality having commissioned them to supply five fire-engines, as many escapes, and a knacker's wagon. After having delayed some time with the motorization of their fire-brigade, the Munich city fathers have obviously determined to force the pace. At Loughborough, there is an opinion that a motorcar might tow the existing engine, instead of '` the prohibitive expense of keeping two horses solely for fire-brigade work." What a place to live in!

Ossett's Order Waiting for Somebody.

There is an order waiting for someone at Ossett, in South Yorkshire. The General Purposes Committee in that town has decided (being apparently much impressed by the good results in the neighbouring town of Dewsbury) to acquire a motor fire-engine and pump, with necessary buildings and firemen. This means severing the agreement hitherto holding good for utilizing the services of the. Dewsbury brigade ; but, on the other hand, the township of Horbury has agreed to pay 275 a year to Ossett for five years, as a sort of retaining fee for the Ossett motor's services.

Reading's Dennis Engines.

The accompanying illustration shows the two, four-cylinder, 50 h.p., London Fire Brigade type, Dennis motor fire-engines which have recently been delivered to the Reading Corporation. Gwynne turbine pumps are fitted. It will be observed that on one of the machines a 50-ft. sliding-carriage escape i3 mounted. The machines are so fitted and arranged that either of them can carry this appliance. A variety of severe tests was applied to these engines, at Reading. last week, before members of the Town Council and large numbers of interested spectators. The results were well above specification.
