TRUCK DRIVERS around the country may soon be told to leave their fuel cards at home after an announcement by BP that it is to scrap agency cards in the Scottish Islands.

BP's decision to end the use of agency cards by the end of the month affects 40 customers in all of Scotland's islands, including the Western Isles.

Few of those hit initially by the new policy are operators. but this may soon change with suggestions that BP will soon he rolling out its policy nationwide.

A source says that a BP staff member told them that the Scottish Islands is the first of a number of places to have the use of agency cards withdrawn.

These cards let drivers pay the same price for fuel wherever they are in the country.

In the Scottish Islands, customers pay about 10p/litre more than in other regions and have some of the highest prices in Europe.

Customers affected by the move have been offered the company's BP Plus card, but with that option they will still pay the full retail price at the pumps.

BP says the decision is due to market pressures. including high crude oil prices and declininR customer numbers,
