Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• -Between junctions 9 and 10 on Ml, and between junctions 4 and 6 on M4 motorway, over 50,000 vehicles pass in a typical 24 hours. At the M1/Mb0 junction the daily total is over 62,000 vehicles.

These figures — relating to 1971, and so certainly exceeded now — are given as a new feature in the latest edition of Highway Statistics. The 82-page book of tables and explanations, Highway Statistics 1971, has just been published by the DoE and is available price £1.12 net from HMSO.

Motorway traffic flows are presented in graphic map form for the first time, covering all the motorways in England and Wales.

Among a host of figures on transport, traffic, registrations, taxation and road spending, the book reveals that UK road transport annual tonnage rose from 1686m in 1970 to 1735m in 1971. The hire and reward haulage tonnage rose by 20m, the ownaccount by 29m, and own-account also showed the biggest ton-mileage increase.

Bus and coach passenger-mileage remained static at 34,000m — compared with sharp declines in several previous years.

Consumers are now spending on transport an average of 10.7 per cent of all their expenditure against 7.6 per cent10 years ago.
