community service and year's ban

A "DESPERATE" driver who drove while disqualified has been sentenced to 240 hours community service, ordered to pay £150 costs and banned for a year.

Denis Hunt, of Bower Mount Road, Maidstone, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and using a driving licence with intent to deceive when he appeared before a district judge at Hertford Magistrates Court.

Anthony Ostrin, prosecuting for VOSA, saidTraffic Examiner Peter Ironmonger was on duty at an organised check when a 7.5-tonne Leyland rigid vehicle driven by Hunt entered the site. Hunt was asked to produce his driving licence for inspection.

A check was made and it was discovered that he was a disqualified driver. Hunt had been disqualified for 1. months for drink driving and the disqualification had not expired. It was further discovered Hunt had produced a duplicate driving licence which did not show the disqualification and as a result he was given employment as a driver by Wharton Freight Services of Barking.

When interviewed, Hunt had been fully co-operative telling the traffic examiner he had no job and was desperate to keep a roof over his head. He had acted out of desperation. Hunt said he had mislaid his original licence before the ban and had applied for a duplicate. He then found the original and handed that to the court, but kept the duplicate.

Sentencing Hunt,District Judge Jane Newman said driving a vehicle of that size while disqualified would normally result in a custodial sentence.
