Poor roads threaten the future of a Scottish paper mill, says a local operator. David Harris reports.

A HAULAGE BOSS is blaming the poor state of Scotland's roads for the potential closure of a Fort William paper mill, Currently the Fort William mill, run by Arjo Wiggins. is in a 90-day period of consultation to try and find a way of saving it.

But if the mill shuts it :ould leave Ferguson Transport, based at nearby Spean Bridge, facing a sharp downturn in work.

MD Alasdair Ferguion says: "It's too early to send shock waves put, but clearly it has zonsequerices for us. About 20% of our work ,..omes from there, so we will need to fill that gap x scale down slightly."

He adds that the mill's plight has not peen helped by ScotLand's infrastructure: 'It really doesn't help that when Arjo Wiggins executives arrive at Glasgow airport they have to drive up the A82 to get here, so they see what an appalling road it is."

Ferguson reports that improvements to the A82 have been promised for years, with no result. "The north-west coast of Scotland deserves a lot better than this," he concludes.

Ado Wiggins says it might have to close the mill because the creditcard paper produced there has been superseded by the chip and pin system of payment.
