extend M74 PLANS TO EXTEND the M74 in Glasgow have been delayed for up to a year following legal action by community groups and environmentalists.

The Scottish Executive decided to press ahead with the scheme, despite a public inquiry which ruled against it. However, Friends of the Earth and the Joint Action Against the M74 (Jam74) have launched an appeal against the decision. Work on the two-and-a half year project is now unlikely start until June 2007.

Road Haulage Association Scottish director Phil Flanders admits that he is extremely disappointed with the news.

"There is a lot of pressure on the roads in Glasgow," he explains. "The Scottish Executive has wasted an opportunity to bring congestion under control and enabling hauliers to get on with their lives. There are a lot angry operators in the city."

Local operator John Milne from Barrhead-based Milne Trucking Co points out that the M74 extension is long overdue. "The delay is terrible," he reports. "The extension would have made a big difference to us, especially with the Working Time Directive."
