• A Parliamentary report published last week has put more pressure on the Ministry of Defence to open up military vehicle maintenance to the private sector.

Based on lessons learned from the Gulf War, the Defence Committee's report urges that the continued need for full La overhaul facilities for vehicles—which are remote from battle areas—is "doubtful". It urged the MoD to consider suggestions by military vehicle maker Aivis Vehicles that the role of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers could be reduced. REME currently handles most of the army's vehicle maintenance—REME personnel are deployed within every regiment. However, the report said some preventative maintenance could only be carried out by MoD staff. The report comes a month before the Government is due to announce its cost cutting proposals within the Services.
