Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By Kevin Swallow VW'S TRANSPORTER is one of the used van market's strongest performers, and the T5 is now six years old. Here is a rundown of what to look out for if you are buying one. (Faults and additional information supplied by usedvanexpert.co.uk)

Vehicle:

Volkswagen Transporter T5 with 1.9 and 2.5litre diesel engines; 84. 102, 128 and 174hp with payloads from 795 to 1,245kg.

Bodywork:

Rear doors: check for stiffness — hinges and bolts are the likely cause, seek £20 discount or have the problem fixed.

Engine:

Cam belt: it should be replaced after four years or 60,000 miles. If it hasn't, it will fail sooner rather than later, leading to potential engine failure. Changing it will cost £460, so ensure it's changed or negotiate a discount.

Oil leaks: check around oil pump or crankshaft and around the bottom left of the engine near the cam belt, if you find a leak, it'll mean new gaskets and seals, £200 discount. Driveshafts: see if any warranty work has been done to fix a loss of drive.

Clutch: start engine, leave it running, listen for chattering noises from transmission and engine bay, if there is any, the clutch is on the way out. Ask for £500 discount to fix.

Chassis

Rear springs: inspect suspension for jagged edge six inches from the top — it means spring has snapped, £140 to fix. Drop-link bushes: drive over bumps and listen for knocking from suspension, if there is, the drop-link bushes need sorting, £200 discounts
