The vine pea harvest was saved from disaster by rains in late May, and the harvest has been early this year. An NFU spokesman says: "Due to plant stress and crop loss in the earlier programmes, a 100% forecasted harvest is not now anticipated."

He adds: "An early start to the 2009 \fining pea harvesting campaign will help fill-up the freezer cabinets quickly after almost running out of last season's production."
