Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A West Country haulier has been refused payment by freight forwarder Northrise since October because he should have returned pallets accompanying a load — but the firm he was delivering to denies such an arrangement existed.

Operator Mike Perry of Midsomer Norton, Avon, picked up a load from Lincoln firm SHL for delivery to RG Wanvick in Wickham, Hants, invoicing Nottingham-based Northrise on 31 October for £188.

But RG Warwick wrote to Perry in March stating: "We have an arrangement with SHL whereby no pallets are returned with the hauliers and therefore there is no reason why Northrise Services should use this as an excuse for not paying you." RG Warwick keeps the pallets until it has a full load to go to SHL. Mike Perry is also owed £900 by Eezee Euro Services which collapsed last summer owing £400,000 — Roy Vernon was a director of the firm.

Remaining Northrise director Glynn Lunn wrote to creditors on 19 June telling them he was merging the company with Vernon's current operation BTDS. Vernon says that announcement was "premature" and that discussions are still taking place. Northrise has closed but Vernon says Lunn is "doing his damnedest" to make sure hauliers get paid. "Northrise is not being liquidated," says Vernon.
