Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A reader at present in the Far East asks for advice as to organizations concerned with motor engineering to which he could apply for membership. Now in Government service, he wishes ultimately to return to transport, if possible on the engineering side, and here again asks for advice as to possible opportunities.

Regarding the first part of the query, the two organizations directly concerned -with motor engineering are as follows: Institution of Mechanical .Engineers (Automobile Division), 1 Birdcage Walk, Londbri, SWI, and the iInstitute of Road Transport Engineers, i Cromwell' Place, Kensington, London,

SW7. . . The former has a membership Of-3,500 in the Automobile Division, whilst the IRTE has a membership of 2,700.

Regarding ultimate employment, this reader will first have to decide whether he has it:preference for the passenger or haulage side of road transport operation, -both of which, of course, have engineering branches. In the passenger industry the size of operating unit is larger and correspondingly the number of engineering staff and opportunities for ultimate promotion to senior appointments are 'possibly greater than in 111,2, haulage industry. There are, however, exceptions such as the nationalized section of haulage—nameir.. BRSwhilst several of the big ancillary users with larqz C-licensed fleets, such as the oil companies. dairies, breweries and the like, employ a full complement of engineers.
